Plan ahead

Key dates

Do these in order. The highlighted step is the one coming up next.

  1. By Nov 6, 2026
Fill out the booking request form

Tell us who's sailing and what kind of cabin you want, and we'll book you into the group block at the group rate. Rooms in the block are released after Nov 6.

Open the booking request form →

  2. ~ June 2, 2027
    Final payment due

Carnival sets final payment around 75 days before short sailings. Your booking confirmation shows the exact date. Missed payments can cancel the cabin.

  3. July 2027
Download the Carnival HUB app and link your booking

This is where you pre-buy drink packages, Wi-Fi, dining and shore add-ons, usually at a lower price than on board.

  4. ~ Aug 2, 2027
    Online check-in opens

Check in the day it opens to grab an early arrival time. Upload your photo and ID details, add a card for your onboard account, and print or save your boarding pass and luggage tags.

  5. By Aug 15, 2027
    Last call for pre-cruise purchases

Drink packages and Wi-Fi plans bought before you sail are typically cheaper. Pre-cruise sales generally close the day before departure.

  6. Mon, Aug 16
    Sail day

Arrive at your check-in time, not earlier. See Embarkation day for the plan.

Dates marked "~" are estimates based on Carnival's usual timing. We'll update this page with exact dates once they're confirmed.

3 nights · 2 ports

Itinerary

Port times are set by Carnival and can shift. Check the HUB app the week before sailing for the final schedule.

  1. Mon, Aug 16
    Long Beach, California

Board in the early afternoon and sail away around 4:00 pm.

  2. Tue, Aug 17
    Catalina Island (Avalon)

This is a tender port. The ship anchors offshore and small boats take you to the pier in Avalon. Tender tickets are handed out on board the morning of the stop, so plan to be up early if you want to go ashore first. Walk the waterfront, rent a golf cart, snorkel at Lover's Cove, or take the zip line.

  3. Wed, Aug 18
    Ensenada, Mexico

The ship docks at the cruise pier, and downtown is a short walk or shuttle away. Popular picks: La Bufadora sea geyser, Valle de Guadalupe wine tasting, fish tacos, and Hussong's Cantina. U.S. dollars and cards are widely accepted. Bring small bills.

  4. Thu, Aug 19
    Return to Long Beach

Arrive early morning. Have breakfast, clear U.S. customs, and be off the ship by about 9:00 am.

All-aboard time in each port is usually 30–60 minutes before departure, and the ship won't wait. Keep your Sail & Sign card and ID with you ashore.

Before you go

Travel documents

We visit Mexico, but because the cruise starts and ends in the same U.S. port, U.S. citizens can sail without a passport. We still strongly recommend one.

U.S. citizens (adults)

  • Best: a valid passport book. If you miss the ship in Ensenada or have an emergency in Mexico, you'll need one to fly home.
  • Also accepted: an original or certified birth certificate plus a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license.
  • Your name must match your booking exactly. Fix any typo in the HUB app or with Carnival well before sailing.

Minors and non-U.S. citizens

  • Children under 16 can use a birth certificate alone.
  • A minor traveling without both parents should carry a signed consent letter from the parent who isn't sailing.
  • Non-U.S. citizens need a passport, plus a green card or valid visa as applicable.

Rules can change. Confirm current requirements on Carnival's travel documents page before you sail.

Onboard

Drink packages

Food in the main dining room and buffet is included. Most drinks beyond water, coffee, tea, and basic juices cost extra.

CHEERS! (alcohol package)

  • If one adult (21+) in a cabin buys CHEERS!, every adult 21+ in that cabin must buy it too.
  • It's priced per day and must cover all 3 days of the cruise. You can't buy it for only one day.
  • Limit of 15 alcoholic drinks per day. Sodas, specialty coffees and bottled water are included.
  • Buy it pre-cruise in the HUB app. It is usually cheaper than on board.
  • Do the math. If you'll average fewer than 5–6 drinks a day, paying per drink is usually cheaper. Remember you'll be ashore much of Tuesday and Wednesday.

Non-alcohol options and what you can bring

  • Bottomless Bubbles covers fountain soda and is popular with kids and non-drinkers.
  • Each guest 21+ may carry on one 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne on embarkation day. A corkage fee applies if you drink it in a bar or dining room.
  • Each guest may bring up to 12 sealed cans or cartons (12 oz or smaller) of non-alcoholic drinks in carry-on luggage.
  • No liquor or beer in your bags. Bottles bought in Ensenada are held by the ship and returned the last night.

Package prices change and an 18% service charge is added to drink purchases. Check the current price in the HUB app.

Stay connected

Wi-Fi and phones

Ship Wi-Fi

  • Carnival sells tiered plans, from a social-media-only plan up to full streaming. Plans are priced per device.
  • Buy pre-cruise in the HUB app for a discount over onboard pricing.
  • The HUB app's ship map, daily schedule and onboard chat work over ship Wi-Fi without buying a plan.

Avoid a surprise phone bill

  • Near the coast and in Catalina you'll have normal U.S. cell service. Out at sea your phone may connect to the ship's maritime network, which charges steep roaming rates.
  • In Ensenada you're on Mexican networks. Many U.S. plans include Mexico, but check yours before you go.
  • Once you leave port, turn on airplane mode and then turn Wi-Fi back on.
  • Turn off automatic photo backups unless you've bought a Wi-Fi plan that can handle them.

Checklist

What to pack

August off Southern California is sunny in the afternoon, often foggy in the morning, and breezy on deck at night. Tap items to check them off. Your checks are saved in this browser.

Money and tips

The ship is cashless

Your Sail & Sign card is your room key and your wallet. Link a credit or debit card during online check-in and every purchase is charged to your onboard account. Review it in the HUB app before you leave.

Gratuities

Carnival automatically adds a daily crew gratuity per guest, usually in the high teens of dollars per person per night (so roughly $50–$60 per person for 3 nights), a little more for suites. You can prepay it before the cruise. Bar and specialty dining charges include an 18% service charge.

Questions

FAQ

Do I need to book shore excursions?

No. Both ports are easy to explore on foot. Book through Carnival in the HUB app if you want a guided tour; Carnival excursions guarantee the ship waits if the tour runs late. Popular tours sell out, so book early.

Do I have to get off at Catalina?

No. You can stay on board in either port. The ship is quieter, and the pools and slides have short lines.

Will there be formal night?

Carnival usually has one "Cruise Elegant" night on 3-night sailings. Dressing up is optional, and resort casual is fine in the main dining room. Wear the group outfit if we pick one.

Can I share a cabin with friends who booked separately?

Each cabin has its own booking. Ask us to link your reservations so you're seated together at dinner and can see each other in the HUB app.

What if I get seasick?

The Southern California coast is usually calm in August. Pick a mid-ship cabin on a lower deck if you're prone to it, and pack a remedy just in case.

What's the cancellation policy?

Penalties increase as the sail date gets closer. Check your booking confirmation for the exact schedule, and consider travel insurance.
